Search and seizure warrants were issued by Ngoepe JP in terms of s 29(4) of the National Prosecuting Authority Act 32 of 1998 as part of a large-scale investigation conducted by the Directorate of Special Operations. One such warrant authorised searches at the Pretoria offices of Thint (Pty) Ltd, a company linked to Mr PJMR Moynot, and formed part of a broader set of warrants executed simultaneously at various premises associated with Mr Jacob Zuma and his legal advisers. The warrants were executed on 18 August 2005 and documents and electronic data were seized. Thint applied in the Pretoria High Court to have the warrant set aside, the searches and seizures declared unlawful, and the seized items returned. The High Court dismissed the application. Thint appealed to the Supreme Court of Appeal, contending principally that the warrant was invalid because the description of the suspected offences was impermissibly vague.
